The Mennonite Quilt Center, located in Reedley, California, is a store and quilt gallery, but more importantly, it is a community of volunteers working together for world relief. We are part of the ministry of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and all proceeds from the sale of quilts, fabrics, supplies, classes, longarm services, fair trade goods, and rugs woven at the center, go for relief around the world. The MQC offers about 1,000 bolts of fabric, quilting and sewing notions, as well as handmade quilts, comforters and rugs. Many of the quilts are made in Southeast Asia as part of a MCC program which helps women provide for themselves and their families. Not only do we want to be the place you buy your quilts and supplies, we want to be the place you volunteer to be part of a ministry dedicated to Relief, Development, and Peace in the Name of Christ. Here are some of the activities we invite you to join: Everyday (except Sundays and holidays), volunteers staff our retail quilt store, assisting customers in selecting fabrics and notions, registering people for classes, and managing our inventory of high quality fabrics. Additionally, specially trained volunteers operate MQC's longarm machine, finishing quilts on behalf of the quilting community. Each Monday morning ladies gather at the MQC, to quilt, tie comforters, have coffee, share recipes, and have fun. Their quilts are displayed in the MQC's quilt museum and auctioned at the annual Mennonite Central Committee Sale and Auction held at Fresno Pacific University each April. Several times each week groups of volunteers gather at the MQC to weave rugs by recycling old blue jeans and denim clothing. The fabric is repurposed into beautiful and durable rugs that are sold in the quilt store and at the annual MCC auction. Click on the video below to see our dynamic weavers in action! We also serve as a MCC Material Resource Center where volunteers assemble relief kits, as well as sort and prepare shipments for thousands around the world. Churches, school groups, families and individuals volunteer on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis. Additionally, we welcome tours of our quilt museum. We demonstrate how quilts are hand made, comforters are tied, and weavers create rugs out of recycled blue jeans. (Please be sure to schedule your group's visit ahead of time so we are ready for you.) When you purchase your fabrics, supplies, rugs, and longarm services from the MQC all the proceeds go to help world relief. When you volunteer you do the same, as well as becoming part of a great and loving community. Please stop in, call or email us today to get involved! |
